Greenify Zanzibar: Urban Shade Trees Taking Root

2024-04-10 Zanzibar, Tanzania #urban-forestry#community#climate

Community-led planting of shade trees across streets, schools, and markets to cool urban spaces and improve air quality.

Greenify Zanzibar is an ongoing campaign to increase urban canopy cover in Stone Town and the surrounding wards.

Working with ward leaders and schools, volunteers plant resilient native species, provide watering support, and track survival rates.

The program reduces heat stress, captures carbon, and creates greener community spaces for gathering and small business.

“These trees are small now, but they are already changing how our streets feel at midday.”

— Asha, Secondary Student
